The Historical Roots of the Russo-Ukrainian War with Sean McMeekin

A talk with a scholar about the tragedy in Europe.

Editor’s Note: The next episode will be behind a paywall, so please consider becoming a subscriber if you are not already.

Sean McMeekin is the Francis Flournoy Professor of European History at Bard College and the author of “Stalin’s War: A New History of World War II.” He joins me for this episode to discuss his latest article for Chronicles, “Putin, Russia, and Ukraine: Historical Roots of a Tragedy.”

It is a lucid and incisive piece of writing that everyone interested in understanding the Russo-Ukrainian War should read. McMeekin is one of the few people with the knowledge and courage to confront the problem with clear eyes. He recently signed the COMPACT statement against interventionism and for de-escalation (my signature is also there).

We touch on key points at the root of the current crisis and more for the hour.
